Curatorial Note

Interventions in the canvas between the application of layers of pigment result in a recording of the previous states of the surface in this series of works exploring perception of relief and ambiguity. The surface of this painting presents the illusion of deep relief in a crumpled material. The use of a deeply coloured background over which the relief is revealed is inspired by early photographic techniques in which the application of photographic emulsion was not consistent and the resulting image appeared to be viewed through this surface. This piece is shipped wired to be displayed in the orientation shown but is intended to be hung in any orientation.
