Automated Velazquez
Curatorial Note
Rich and sensuous, this painting features a folded and undulating surface reminiscent of drapery in baroque paintings by artists like Velazquez. It is also inspired by the use of velvet in the films of David Lynch. Interventions in the canvas between the application of layers of pigment result in a recording of the previous states of the surface in this series of works exploring perception of relief and ambiguity. The surface of this painting presents the illusion of a draped and folded fabric such as velvet in a deep red. The canvas is mounted on a reclaimed strainer with reclaimed gold coloured frame which is slightly battered and scratched, giving a sense of faded luxury. This piece would hang well in any room where a sense of old world luxury and distressed grandeur is desired. This piece is shipped wired to be displayed in the orientation shown but is intended to be hung in any orientation. Hanging these pieces in sympathy with the light sources in the room in which they are displayed heightens their trompe l'oiel effect.
