Curatorial Note

In Framed Drawing (55.1), on the opposite wall, we see a perplexed face. The colorful backdrop, in luscious neon colors suggests many layers of a field within which the character is contained. The shapes in the drawing allude to repetitive moments. The square-ish shape repeats to create an image. Becker, in his mode of drawing, utilizes words which form poems. These words and characters are illegible through the process of abstraction that the artist develops. Words become shapes which contain the essence of the word imbued in its new physical container. At one point in the history of smartphones, when a user would not update their phone, emojis would display as empty square boxes. Here, the essence of the feeling has been input by the user, but the meaning is lost in a tangible form to the receiver. The information that is now received is the energy of the emotion which was shared.
