Angles of Incidence (Yellow)
Curatorial Note
Interventions in the canvas between the application of layers of pigment result in a recording of the previous states of the surface in this series of works exploring perception of relief and ambiguity. The surface of this painting presents the illusion of deep relief in a crumpled material. Patterns and shapes may appear to the viewer but the process of making these paintings is mostly random. The application of an underlayer of deep colour and the overlay of this with lighter tones is inspired by the appearance of early photographic plates in which the photosensitive chemicals were applied with a brush. The resulting image appeared to be viewed through this rough edged 'window'. This piece is shipped wired to be displayed in the orientation shown but is intended to be hung in any orientation.
