Ije (pronounced ee-jay)
Ije is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, and installation. Embodied, durational movement informs her attention to rhythm, weight, and the negotiation of space. This kinetic sensibility becomes an aesthetic language in which materials act as skin, sinew, and fractured horizon.
She frequently incorporates found and re-used materials—including galvanised mesh, silicone, textiles, mirrored glass, and industrial swarf—chosen for their inherent sensuousness, histories and capacity to hold memory. Through heavy layering, rhythmic mark-making, and repetition, she creates highly tactile, often multi-positional forms that challenge standard horizons and invite viewers to encounter landscapes and themselves differently.
Born in Scotland to British/Nigerian heritage, her work is shaped by nomadic and transitional movement across landscapes and cultures, a lived sense of permeable identity: “Mmiri Mmiri / I am fluid.”
